Almost everyone experiences a pimple outbreak at some point in their life.
While acne is often linked to adolescence, adults make up about 20% of cases. It usually starts during the teenage years, typically between ages 10 and 13, and tends to be more severe in individuals with oily skin.
Both genders are affected, though teenage boys tend to have the most severe cases. Women, however, are more likely than men to develop mild to moderate acne in their thirties and beyond.
Acne lesions commonly appear on the face but can also occur on the neck, chest, back, shoulders, and upper arms.
The condition begins when oily secretions from the skin’s sebaceous glands block the small openings of hair follicles. If the pores remain open, the blockages appear as whiteheads, small, flesh-colored bumps. Both types of clogged pores can lead to swelling, sensitive inflammations or pimples, as well as deeper nodules.
In severe cases of acne (cystic acne), nodules are solid swellings beneath the skin’s surface that become inflamed, painful, and sometimes infected.
